From Director of Schools Tim Haney:

Update: As stated in the post last week, please find here the promised information as to meal distribution and the continuation of educational services:

Meal distribution: TSSD will serve 'grab and go' meals on Monday's and Wednesday's, at TES, from 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon. We will also deliver to all 5 Trenton Housing Authority locations as well as Green Acres and Gibson Housing. Please understand, should the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county rise, we may have to reconsider whether or not to continue the delivery aspect of this program.
Also, remember, the meals are offered to ALL children in the district- they just need to be present to receive it.

Educational services: We have added 2 more dates for parents and students to pick up materials. Those dates are Monday, April 6 and Monday, April 20, from 10:00 AM-6:00 PM, at each school. I would like to add here that we understand that you are working and raising a family in the middle of a public health crisis; therefore, if this work becomes overwhelming for your child, please know that we will work with him/her to fill any gaps when things return to normal. Encourage them, but we understand that, temporarily, academics may move down the list of priorities. Relax, and give us what you can as you can. Thanks.

Instructional Packet Pick-up Schedule
Thursday, March 19  3:00-6:00 PM
Friday, March 20  7:00-10:00 AM

The cafeteria will be open and staff will be available to assist in packet pick-up. This packet of materials will cover a week’s worth of review for the week of March 30. All parents are encouraged to pick up your child’s work. Time should be set aside each day to complete school work. It is our hope that instruction will continue even while school is not in session. All teachers will be available via email or other messaging providers to assist when needed. Do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher with questions or concerns. Thank you for helping us make learning a priority during this time.

Based on recommendations from Governor Bill Lee, the Trenton SSD will not be in session March 17, 2020 through April 3, 2020. We will reassess prior to that time to determine when classes will resume. More information will be coming...PLEASE check our websites and social media OFTEN for updated information.

UPDATE: Tracy Simmons, the Trenton Special School District (TSSD) Director of Coordinated School Health and Holly Barnett, TSSD’s Social Worker, attended the LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee) meeting held Wedneday, March 11. Mike Duck from the Department of Health spoke about the Coronavirus. These are points made at thsat meeting:

  • Starts with fever followed by dry cough (usually no mucus related symptoms i.e. sore throat, etc.)
  • can develop into shortness of breath and pneumonia about a week after onset
  • spread person to person within 6 feet of a person's sneeze or cough - droplets from infected person entering nose/mouth/eye membrane of people around them, not airborne, but still no clear answer on surface contact leading to a diagnosis
  • death rate is 1-2% with average age 80 and increased risk to those with other health factors (cardiovascular disease, COPD, cancer, etc.)
  • in US as of this morning - around 1000 diagnosed cases, 31 deaths, 37 states; compared to the flu with 32 million diagnosed cases and 18,000 deaths
  • in TN - 7 cases (1 in Shelby, 1 in Davidson, 1 in Sullivan, 4 in Williamson). NOTE: There are, of course, already more now.
  • encouraging continued/increased good health habits with handwashing and minimizing exposure to sick people; stay home if sick, etc.
  • if cases diagnosed closer to home, will be up to organzation/business to decide whether to shut down or not; there will not be a directive from emergency management folks.
  • confirmed case patient and family members will be quarantined for 14 days.
  • some nursing homes are closing to visitors; others are screening (taking temperatures, questions about travel) as visitors enter
  • Info line 1-877-857-2945 open from 10am - 10pm
